The Spokane Chiefs defeated Portland Winterhawks 5-1 for their third win of the preseason.
The Chiefs would get on the board first midway thru the first with a nice wrist shot from Marek Kalus. Collin Valcourt would redirect a shot from Connor Chartier almost two minutes later for the second goal of the period.
The Chiefs would have a couple power play opportunities and a couple 4 on 4’s in the second period but failed to score on 17 shots in the period. Darren Kramer would get a two-minute roughing penalty with 2:01 remaining, but the Chiefs were able to kill off the penalty and hold Portland scoreless after two periods of play.
The Chiefs would have to go on a 5 on 3 penalty kill early in the third period and failed to hold on as Joe Morrow found the back of the net with a shot from the blue line. The Chiefs would respond two minutes later with a top shelf shot from Anthony Bardaro and an assist from Dominik Uher.
The Chiefs would finally score on the power play with 6:15 remaining in the third with a goal from Anthony Bardaro. Lukas Walter decided he would try to start a fight with Kramer with 6 to go, needless to say Walter found himself on the short end of the stick. Right after the Chiefs power play expired Dominik Uher would find the back of the net for the chiefs final goal of the game with assists from Anthony Bardaro and Tyler Vanscourt.
Mac Engel would start in net for the Chiefs and stopped all 15 shots he faced. Jacob Edwards would relieve Mac Engel with 7 minutes remaining in the second. Edwards would stop 12 of 13 shots in 27 minutes of action. The Chiefs were 1 for 7 on the power play and 7 for 8 on the penalty kill.
With the win the Chiefs are now 3-0 in preseason. The Chief’s next preseason game will be Friday, September 9th at 3:00 pm, against the Seattle Thunderbirds, at the Tri Cities Annual Preseason Tournament.
